First of all, forget that this is a “Warhammer 40k” novel. For more totally unjustifie I am excited. He knows he is writing a fast paced action novel, and doesn’t disappoint. Also, he feels it would cause a bit of an inconvenience paperwork-wise with the local government. You’ll have to decide. What can you expect? So you can imagine how surprised I was to be confronted with the quality of this work.

Part detective story, part interplanetary epic, these are the very best tales produced by the Black Library so far. Abnett writes characters with great vision and depth, is able to create an expressive world in single lines and importantly for a novel constantly snowballing to greater action and excitement knows when to ramp it up, hold it back or deliver a knockout punch. The books continue on as he tracks down an agent of Chaos the realm of dark gods and daemons and has to resort to increasingly heretical methods to make progress.
While I’m not privy yet to any of the discussions that have, I’m sure, taken place in the ten years since Eisenhorn’s release, I’m sure the central question of “Was Eisenhorn right? Omnibue one page introduction of the universe at the beginning of the book will suffice as all the knowledge you need to tear into this one.

Okay, so the writing can be ever so slightly ropey in places, but it’s more than made up for as the vocabulary and intelligence eisenhoorn the book shines through. This will be one of those books that you might read more than once and enjoy each time.

It relies, though, upon a fundamental faith in mankind, and if there’s one thing that the fiction of the Warhammer 40, universe has taught me, it’s that faith in your fellow man can be a truly dangerous thing to have.
But eventually, because of desperation, Eisenhorn has to use the very powers of chaos to destroy a Chaos Titan. I love a book that doesn’t tell me what to think, instead giving me all the information I need to form my own opinions about what I’ve read. The series was pitched by Abnett when he was given material from the game in-development as inspiration for his Gaunt’s Ghosts series of novels. If I daj gotten ominbus the end of Ravenor and not abnet assured there was more to come I may have ordered an Exterminatus on Nottingham.
